Self Storage – A First Time Renter’s FAQ’s

First Time Self Storage Renter's FAQs

At Montgomery Self Storage, we try to make renting a storage unit as simple as we can and our friendly, knowledgeable managers are always happy to answer questions and walk you through the process. As a locally owned and operated business in the Montgomery, Conroe, Magnolia, and Northwest Houston area, we can be more flexible than the national chains. Here is some information that we believe first-time storage renters will find helpful.

Start by determining what type and size of unit you need.

The first thing any renter will want to know is how much will it cost a month. In order to find that out, you will need to decide what size storage unit you need and whether or not the items you intend to store will be best served by a climate controlled-unit or a non-climate-controlled unit.

This previous blog will help address the first question and assist you in selecting the size unit you need, including helpful descriptions of the various standard unit sizes and a rough idea of what will fit in each size. Additionally, on our website, you can select a location and see what unit sizes are available. When you do, there is a graphic giving an idea of what can fit in each size, just click on it to see it larger. You can also click for more detailed descriptions of what fits in a 5×5 and a 10×20 unit.

From there, you can find helpful information about climate-controlled self-storage here and suggestions for the types of items that are recommended for both non-climate-controlled and climate-controlled storage in this blog. Additionally, you may want to check these out if your plans include storing electronics or furniture.

What is required to rent a unit?

Once you know the size and type of unit, you can look online or call one of our six locations to see the availability and make a plan to visit during office hours and see the units available. When you are ready to do the paperwork, you will need a valid form of identification such as a driver’s license, passport, or military ID. Our manager will help walk you through the process, explain about renter’s insurance and answer any questions you may have. No long-term commitments are required at Montgomery Self Storage and all contracts are month-to-month.
