The Smart Way to Store Electronics

Best Way to Store Electronics

Even though you may only be planning to store your electronics for a few short months, Montgomery Self Storage recommends that you consider using these suggestions to properly ensure they will be good to go when you need them. Electronics can be large purchases so take the time to protect your investment.

Best Way to Store Electronics In A Storage Unit - Montgomery Self Storage

Take a Picture of the Electronic Connections

Before detaching any connections, take a picture of the back of the electronic items so you know which wire goes in which outlet. Use this as a reference when you are setting up the TV or computer in your new home.

Be Sure to Backup, Cleanup and Empty Out

Create backup files of all digital data before moving electronic items to storage. Clean all screens to prevent the buildup of dust, which can cause damage. Remove CDs, DVDs, Blu-Rays, ink jet cartridges, batteries and other materials from the electronic equipment before you prepare for storage.

Use Original Packaging if Possible.

The optimal electronics packing solution is to use the original packing boxes and material if possible. The items will already fit perfectly in the specially designed product boxes that were most likely originally designed for overseas shipping.

If original box is not available, wrap them in anti-static foam to keep the screens protected and add additional filler material in the box for added protection. Seal the boxes completely with packing tape. Avoid packing in plastic tubs with lids that will trap moisture.

Label Accessories and Keep Them Together

Detach the wires and other accessories that go along with your electronics (keyboard, mouse, speakers, cords and cables). Bundle the wires together. Label each wire with a specific color sticker that coincides with its equipment. Keep electronic components together in a plastic bag attached to the electronic item. Make a list of everything within the electronic box. Put this in the box for reference when you are unpacking. It’s a good idea to keep an inventory list of all the items that you are storing.

Proper Storage Techniques for Electronics

When moving into your storage unit, place electronics towards the back of the unit for added protection. Raise all storage containers off the ground with pallets or bricks to avoid moisture damage. Avoid placing items on top of boxes containing electronics. Do not store large screen TV’s flat on the floor. Store these larger electronic items leaning against the wall of the storage unit with a blanket or sheet over them.
