Spring Clean Your Storage Unit

Spring is upon us! The days are longer, giving us more time for those special projects, like Spring Cleaning. At Montgomery Self Storage, our on-site managers make it a priority to keep the exterior of our buildings and the grounds as clean and neat as possible. Our customers are responsible for the inside of their units, which should be cleaned, dusted and the contents moved annually. Here are a few tips to help with this project:

Bring from home
Broom, dustpan, shop vac (if your unit has access to power) rags, paper towels, dusters that extend, furniture polish, trash bags and other cleaning products. You may want to wear gloves, a hat and a mask or bandana to avoid inhaling dust.

Look & Label
As you are moving your stored items for cleaning, be sure to look inside any unlabeled boxes or plastic bins. It’s important to know what you are storing and how to find it when you need. Take a few extra minutes to make sure you still need it and label it if you do.

Merge & Purge
If you haven’t used something in the last 12 months and it’s not of sentimental value, it’s probably time to donate it or put it in a garage sale. Getting rid a few things you don’t need each year helps you be able to better find the things you do need when you need them. It also helps make room for new items to added after you Spring Clean your home.

Move & Clean
If possible, take all items out of the unit and give it a good sweeping or use a shop vac if your unit has access to power. Don’t forget to take a broom to the walls and the back and bottom of the door. Dust off all of the boxes, plastic bins and furniture while they are still outside the unit. Once everything is clean, start moving it back. Remember to put the heaviest items on the bottom and stack with the lightest items on top and make sure all labels are easily read.

Finishing Touches
If you know the items you will need on your next visit, put those in last so they will be easy to find quickly. Consider putting out a few open boxes of baking soda to keep away any musty smells. You will enjoy visiting your unit more when it is clean and organized.
